F3 Woodinville: Tour de WHS

Tour de WHS:
3 HIMs exercised all around Woodinville High School (WHS) on a sunny hazy orange post-fireworks morning!

The PAX: Brady, Ping Pong, Salsa (Q)

Just before 5:29am’ish, Brady & I got to meet Ping Pong, just before he arrived we were discussing how many of the Woodinville F3 regulars (we missed ya! – FSBO, Goats, Hollywood, Hurley, Spam, Worthington, XBox) were probably either smart sacking from yesterday’s convergance workouts that took place (Tacoma & Krikland)! Or they are out of town or resting from staying out late from last night’s fireworks!

The Thang:

After quickly learning of Ping Pong’s background and this being his 1st time visit to this AO. I changed the type of workout to allow us to cover many of the various terrain and natural structures spread all around WHS (a tour of WHS) – Also, I wanted to be mindful of some issues PAX members had in terms of shoulder/wrist issues and I avoided any balls-to-the-walls related type of work this morning (as much as possible)…

Warmup with 20 SSH, 20 Air Squats, 20 Alternating Forward lunges in place, 20 little baby arm circles forward and then 20 bigger arm circles forward.

That definitely got the blood flowin’… did a quick 10 count… Good…. we then mosied to our first set of stairs just behind the baseball dugout…

(WOD: Workout Of the Day)

WOD#1: “stairs w/ burpees while others wait in a seated air chair position” x 2
Each round:
One of the PAX runs up 3 flights of stairs (stepping on each step) and then completes 5 Burpees at the top and then runs back down stepping on each step back to the fence line. And then swaps with the next PAX member inline.
The other PAX members sit in a seated chair position against the dugout fence holding a seated position until it is their turn…Our quads were definitely burning!

Repeato for a 2nd round!

Initially, I had visions of doing some Bernie Sanders next, but after that 2nd round, we got enough burn for now, ha ha!

we then mosied to the 400M track for our next WOD…

WOD#2: “4 Corners”
Run to the 1st corner, do 10 Burpees
Run to the 2nd corner, do 10 Captain Thors (kudos Brady!)
Run to the 3rd corner, do 10 Merkins (kudos Ping Pong), Ping Pong was inspired to use one of the smaller tires to make it an incline set of meekins and I did the same. Then he stated his interested in potentially doing some sled pull type of exercises just for fun! Maybe next time Ping Pong!
Run to the 4th corner and we did 10 jumping sumo squats.

We then mosied back up to the Salmon ladder area…

WOD#3: “Stairs & Lunges”
Go up each flight stairs and take each step and then on the flats forward lunge until you reach the the next flight of stairs and repeat until we reached the area where the path turns into a ramp up

WOD#4: “Bear Crawls”
We then Bear Crawled up to the corner of path where it started to turn right (about 150/200 ft in distance?)

Bradey was a trooper and modified with forward walking lunges, nice job brother!

…as the tour de WHS continued…

WOD#5: “Crabwalks”
We then did backward crabwalks all the way to area with the flagpoles (both Ping Pong and Brady modified to do backward walking lunges – nice job guys!)

As we were moseying across, I learned from Ping Pong how he enjoyed the Spartan races he did in Bangkok, Thailand. One of them that started at 12pm with 100+ Fahrenheit heat and high humidity, OMG!!!

From here I continued the “tour de WHS” with 10-20-30 WOD…

WOD#6: 10 Box Jumps, 20 Incline Merkins, 30 Decline Merkins

As needed, some of us modified the box jumps with step ups. Also, Brady modified his base position to complete incline and declines, inspiring brother!

After getting a 10 sec count, I then turned to our right and introduced Ping Pong to a Jacob’s ladder…

WOD#7: Jacob’s Ladder w/ Jumping Air Squats/Cotton Pickers

Run up the first 3 group of stairs, then do 6 Jumping air squats, then run back down and do 1 Cotton Picker, then 5-2, 4-3, etc… 1-6.

We then mosied down to “Bear Crawl Canyon”…

WOD#8: First half of the distance, forward walking lunges and then on the 2nd half of the distance backward walking lunges

Our quads were burning again, oh my!

With only about 5-6 minutes left, there was just enough time to squeeze in one more WOD for our tour, ha ha…

WOD#9: Sweedish Mile up the hill to the top of the parking lot.

Ping Pong and Brady definitely brought their A-Game this morning to push through as we each took turns jogging up hill!

Once at the top we did one more 10sec count and we mosied back to the covered area.

Announcements:

Ping Pong asked what do the 3 F’s in F3 represent? Brady and I responded “Fitness, Fellowship and Faith”

Ping Pong asked about PB&J, and I stated “Park, Beer and Jam”. I told him that F3 meets in the trail area behind the Chainline brewery in Kirkland. He might stop by tonight.

Check out www.f3pugetsound.com for all Q sign-ups, backblasts, and location information.

WoW:

Brady mentioned how last week, when he was out of town, how easy it is when working out by yourself to not push yourself and back off. Working out with F3 makes him want to push harder when an exercise gets tough.

Ping Ping mentioned how he likes the commeraderie all of the F3 workouts he has attended. And he is potentially going to try to bring something like this to his area in Bangkok, Thailand when he gets back.

Great words guys!

Next week: Q is open for now.

Cheers.

At least once during each F3 workout, I have self talk that I can’t do this. Pushing through that voice creates momentum for the rest of the day. Being mindful of this makes it a little easier each time to crush negative self talk.

WoW:

Overcommitting is an ongoing challenge for me. Before committing to something optional, rate your excitement on a scale of 1-10. Here’s the trick: DO NOT USE 7. 7 is a cop out number. No one wants to do a six, and an 8 is pretty exciting. Eliminating 7 forces you to clarify your intention and be more decisive.

Four Strong

PAX: Skip (LIFO), Snip, Thriftshop, and Xbox (Q)

DATE: 29JUN2018

Warmup: Ran away as Skip joined late – felt guilty and went back for him….he is my boss after all – over to the baseball field as Field 5 was taken over by huge tents.

  • 20 IC SSHs
  • 10 IC Windmills
  • 10 IC Cotton Pickers
  • 10 IC Merkins
  • 15 IC Arm-circles and then flapjack

Thang: Red barchetta

  • 100 SSHs

Partnered up and did a modified Dora 1-2-3

  • 100 Lunges
  • 200 American Hammers (2 count)
  • 300 Merkins of any flavor (Diamond, Regular, or Wide arm)

PAX was pretty tired out at this point, so we did some planks to rest…for about 2.5 minutes high, and then 2.5 minutes low.

6 MoM….ha!  Not many of the PAX was aware what MoM stood for, so YHC explained, all while the PAX got a rest.  Aye.  Snickered me for a rest period while YHC bantered.

  • 25 IC Rosalitas
  • 25 IC Dollies
  • 15 IC Flutters

….and done

Moleskin: Snip has become a consistent member of the Field 5 PAX.  Very happy to provide another opportunity to get involved in the PAX sir; YHC knows that mornings are difficult while taking care of family.

While Thriftshop lives out in Duvall, it is also difficult for him to be in many workouts.  He has been a very consistent, OG PAX member, and my backup Site Q since inception.  Happy to see you every week.  Thanks for the running push every week sir!  #runwithfastermen

As an admitted Sad Clown (SAD CLOWN: A man with Decelerating Fitness (only because of knee surgery), Fellowship (normal 40 year old problem where we work too much and neglect our social life) and/or Faith), Skip has been a welcome competitor and very consistent through the short time of Field 5 existence.  YHC is very happy to share the F3 experience with him and excited for the opportunity to see him included in other F3 events\workouts.

WoW: YHC read a quote by Angela Ducksworth on grit that YHC found inspiring:

Taking a lesson from child psychology, Angela advocates the use of “proximal development”: “…give somebody something that they’re just able to do with support, then once they’re able to do that [on their own], you give them the next thing they’re just able to do, and that’s how they grow.”
Do something hard men.  Put support around yourself and get to 100% where you are just short of ability.  In F3 land, Q!!  Ask for support and do it!
Thank you for the honor of leading men.  Peace.

WoW

Jemaine told parable of the two wolves Struggling and fighting with one another within us: the good one that represents friendship, fellowship, cooperation, love, virtue truth,  and the bad one that represents stealing, lying, fear, distrust, Hate.  The grandfather told little child the story, who asked, “which one wins the fight grandfather?“ Grandfather replies “the one that you feed”.

Solid words to remind us of the good wolf in all of us that we need to nurture.

Defiance: Roll of the Dice

Four guys came out for the Wednesday workout in Tacoma. Matlock, Bivy, DDT and Lunger (Q).

After warmups of SSH, Mericans and a 400m mosey, the workout began.

The pax picked six exercises (Q had discretion to remove any): Mericans, dips, Russian twists, accordians, squats and burpees. The Q rolls a pair of dice. The number rolled x 10 is the reps for the selected workout. For example, we did burpees first. A six was rolled so we did 60. Then there were 40, four- count Russian twists. Go through the list – twice.

The looks on Bivy and Matlock’s faces was priceless when they realized how the workout operated and they had picked burpees. DDT knew what was what because this was inspired from a ruck we did in May.

A good workout. Everyone was tired and ready for dinner.

Sprinkler Tag at Crestwoods

6/27/2018 at KiMS

9 men showed up for a little sprinkler tag and etc. at Crestwood park this morning.

PAX present: Jermaine, Buckeye, Bam Bam, Kramer, Spotlight, Elon, Worthington, Gilligan, SPAM (Q).

No Gloom to be had–just another sunny morning in paradise until we got started on the pain:

CoP: Merkins x 15, Plankorama 2 min, THE AP-Diamond (ie growler diamond merkins x 5). Little baby arm circles x 10 each direction.

The Thang:
Mosey to Crestwood soccer field where the sprinklers were singing their songs*, split the Pax in 2.
Pax 1: Out-and-back Red Barchetta to include 100 SSH, 75 MC, 50 LBC, 25 Merkins, 10 Burpees.
Pax 2: 4 corners: 10 Merkins, 10 squats, 10 squats, 10 Burpees–AMRAP until Pax 1 is complete
Flapjack and repeato.

Mosey to playground
Pax 1: down the stairs and back up
Pax 2: 5 pull ups and 10 Burpees–AMRAP* until Pax 1 is complete.
Flapjack and repeato.

Mosey to street, hit AMRAP sumo squats while Elon goes back for his gloves on the soccer field.

AYG run back to CoT, Done.

Spreadsheets:
* During Good Mornings Worthington Nathan Merz showed strong leadership by subverting the cadence with the phrase “good-morning” at EVERY count (including YHC’s 1-2-3). The rest of the pax joined in (lemmings) and laughter ensued. YHC’s cadence was drowned out and we moved on to Merkins.
* Sprinklers were mostly unavoidable, but became a welcome refreshment at the sweaty second-half.
* the pull-up and Burpee combo torched the shoulders, YHC will be feeling it today, hope it is the same for all.

Announcements: Rucks, Tough Mudder, and Putt-Putt. Refer to the calendars.

WoW: Jermaine expressed appreciation for the routine of F3 and the sprouts of good things coming from it in his life. I piled on with a lament for family being gone and a lot of routines with it, but F3 provides some structure to help with that.
We dispersed at that point, but a shout-out to Bam-Bam, who stopped me in the parking lot and encouraged me to reach out to some buddies and remember that I need to value and take care of myself too, that family is important, and it sucks to be apart, but they are not everything. There is a “me”, ie, I am important to take care of even when alone. Truth. well said and well received, and true for all y’all as well.

Get after it today gentlemen.

Dodging Rain Drops for the Boxtrot

3 Men met in Redmond for a Boxtrot run.

The PAX: Hollywood (Q), Salsa, Worthington

The Thang – Hit the trail, turn left. 2 miles out, 2 miles back. Salsa’s watch had us at a 9:18/mile pace.

Great discussion the whole way. Recapping Worthington’s weekend.

At the end we discussed training for the Rucks coming up. The benefits of adding PT into the training sessions, and working with Kettle Bells and other coupons.

WoW focused on getting better and pushing ourselves. Always grateful for F3.

As always…the rain took a break for the majority of our run. Started to come down hard again as I was driving home. Don’t be scared by the rain. Get out there!
